Badwater Basin's Salt Flats
Salt flats are too harsh for most plants and animals to survive, yet are quite fragile. The salt flats in Badwater Basin cover nearly 200 square miles, among the largest protected salt flats in the world. The source of Badwater’s salts is Death Valley’s drainage system of 9,000 square miles—an area larger than New Hampshire.
The Artists Palette - Nature's Easel
The rainbow of Artists Palette is the highlight along the Artists Drive Scenic Loop. Marvel at an array of colors (red, orange, yellow, blue, pink, and green), splashed across the hills. These colors are from volcanic deposits rich in compounds such as iron oxides and chlorite, which creates a rainbow effect.
Mesquite Sand Dunes
The conditions at Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes are perfect for the creation of dunes, and while individual grains move, and ripples form, the dune field remains. These dunes are named for the mesquite tree which grows in abundance in the area. The Mesquite Dunes are known for dramatic shadows at sunrise and sunset, as ripples and edges in the dunes stand out in greater contrast.
