Zion National Park in Utah, is truly a Geological Marvel. Its 2000 feet high sandstone slot canyons carved by meandering Virgin river stand testimony to million years of nature's handiwork.

  • In April 2022, my family and I flew in to Las Vegas Nevada.
  • For next 5-6 days, we took road trips to different national or state park.
  • States were Nevada , Utah, Arizona and California
  • One Park was Zion National Park in Utah.
  • Its 2000 feet high sandstone slot canyons are carved by meandering Virgin river
  • These stunning slot canyons are testimony to millions of years of nature's handiwork

What are Slot Canyons?

Zion National Park is renowned for its slot canyons, with The Narrows being the most famous. Other notable slot canyons within or near the park include The Subway, Pine Creek Slot Canyon and Keyhole Canyon are others.  What are Slot Canyons?

  • A slot canyon is a narrow, deep canyon with steep, vertical walls.
  • Slot Canyons are typically formed by water erosion in sedimentary rock like sandstone.
  • Water erosion is caused by a river body which in Zion is the Virgin river.
  • These canyons are known for their depth to width ratios, often exceeding10:1
  • Slot Canyons are found in arid and semi arid regions
  • Slot Canyons are particularly found in south western United States like Utah, Arizona etc.

How Do You Get There?

You can reach the Zion National Park by road, rail and air both from inside Utah as well as neighboring states like Arizona, Nevada etc. An exciting way though is by road.

  • We went by road from Las Vegas in Nevada to the Zion National Park in Utah.
  • We crossed the Spectacular Virgin River Gorge in Arizona to Zion (see below map).

  • It took us about 150 minutes from Las Vegas to the Zion on the InterState I15 mainly with no stops on the way.
  • Zion has convenient transport links by rail, road and air from anywhere in the United States

You can reach the Zion National Park by road, rail and air both from inside Utah as well as neighboring states like Arizona, Nevada etc.

An exciting way though is by road.

2000 ft Sandstone Slot Canyons

Zion National Park boasts among others jaw dropping 2000ft high sandstone slot canyons carved by the meandering Virgin River flowing through the park. Narrows is one of the most popular hiking trails through the Zion canyon while the dangerously high Angels Trail is now regulated by the park.

Narrows is one of the most popular hiking trails through the Zion canyon. The Virgin river  which also flows through the Narrows hiking trail frequently has flash floods which turn the river into a raging torrent not to mention water dropping from 2000ft slot canyon tops.
