You can reach Rohtang Pass at an elevation of 13058 Feet by road from Manali which is inside Himachal Pradesh, India. It is best enjoyed as a breathtaking drive with stunning panoramas by road.

  • We went by road from Manali in Himachal Pradesh to Rohtang Pass.
  • The road snakes its way through the Pir Panjal Himalayan Mountain Ranges (see below map).
  • It is a breathtaking journey and the experience of a life time.
  • It took us about 3 hours from Manali to Rohtang Pass with stops to admire the scenery, take pictures.
  • The road is part of the Manali - Leh Highway which goes on past Rohtang to Leh, Ladakh.

Monitor the Weather - Check Road Condition!

Remember that the weather may not be the same between origin and destination. In particular, if you are driving up the mountain, you should check weather conditions definitely.

  • The weather may not be the same between origin and destination
  • Manali to Rohtang Pass can take from 3 hours to 15 hours (see below)
  • Weather can change in the mountains very quickly and a landslide will mean the road is blocked indefinitely
  • During summer, rain is a factor turning roads slushy
  • During winters, road may be closed to public
  • The entire stretch of road to Rohtang Pass has no guard rails!!!!
  • Traffic is two way with the road just about enough for two sedans to get through

Gas Station Proximity

This may seem trivial but it could be catastrophic. No exaggeration. Ensure your gas tank is filled since there are few gas stations on the way.

  • You don't want to be stranded on the mountain without gas!
  • If you fill your tank at Manali, you should be good for a return trip
  • Also, since the vehicle will be traveling on low gears, that will guzzle fuel
  • Fellow travelers are generally helpful but that might not included gas

This may seem trivial but it could be life or death. Seriously No exaggeration.

Ensure your gas tank is filled since there are few gas stations on the way.

Keep Tire Pressure Checked, Updated

Your car runs smoothly on updated tire pressure (apart from the engine!). No exaggeration. If you foresee,driving through dirt tracks, off roads, this is a life saver. Ignore at your peril.

  • Check out GPS Routing for the Return Trip
  • Why? Because often the return route is not the same.
  • You Want to Ensure that you are comfortable with the return routing
  • Remember, you have set out on a road trip but will return to your origin finally.
  • What happens if the return route is different? 
  • This might impact the duration of your journey
  • Longer return trip might mean appropriate stops
  • If Onward trip turned out not so good, you might have to route differently on return
