Bushwalk with Male Cheetah

A heart stopping "bushwalk" alongside a magnificent adult male cheetah as it strides through the bush deep in the jungle in Karongwe Private Game Reserve, South Africa.

Location

Video Shot From

Notice in the video that I am walking almost parallel to the male cheetah through the bush.

This cheetah is to my left about 10 feet away

Video Camera Used

Sony FDR AX53

The video camera I used is the 4K Sony FDR AX53. For more details, go to Ultimate Guide on Videography.

Video TIPS

  • I had my 4K Sony Camera low as I walked holding it below the top of the bush
  • Holding a camera at standing height does not provide dimension.
  • Keeping camera below the height of the bush provides context to the subject - you are in the jungle
  • This is why the cheetah pops in the frame

Cheetah in African Wildlife Parks

The Cheetah is the fastest land animal on earth. It can reach speeds of 100 Kms per hour. It's habitat is mainly savannahs and prairies. It is found in abundance in African wildlife parks like Serengeti, Masai Maara and in South Africa in the Greater Kruger Area. Here are my Cheetah experiences in different wildlife parks in Africa.

Question 01 - WHERE WILL I BE ABLE TO SEE CHEETAHS IN THE WILD?

Africa is THE place to see the cats including the magnificent Cheetah - the fastest land animal on this planet.

Cheetahs are generally found in savannahs - tall grass.

Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya, Kruger National Park in South Africa are game reserves where you can see this feline in reasonable abundance.

Question 02 - WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A CHEETAH AND A LEOPARD?

A Cheetah and a Leopard are often confused one for the other. This is because both cats have spotted skins. However, while a Cheetah has Spots on its body, the leopard has Rosettas. The Cheetah is built on a more slim structure optimized for running at high speeds compared to a leopard.

A Cheetah mainly hunts during the day while a Leopard hunts at night although these behavior may change in situations.

A Leopard can climb a tree nimbly and often stores its kill high up on trees while a Cheetah generally stays away from heights on trees.

Question 03 - Are both cheetah and Leopards part of the big five of africa?

No. A Leopard is part of both the Big Five of Africa (Lion, Elephant, Rhino, Buffalo and Leopard) While the Cheetah is only part of the Super Seven of Africa which apart from the Big Five of Africa include the Cheetah and Wild Dog.
