How Do You Get There?

You can reach the Masai Mara National Reserve by road, rail and air both from inside Kenya as well as neighboring countries like Tanzania.

  • We went by road from Nairobi city to Masai Mara National Reserve (see below map).
  • We stayed at the Sopa Safari Lodge right inside the Masai Mara National Reserve
  • It took us 6 hours from Nairobi to Masai Mara as we drove west with a brief stop on the way.
  • The highway from Nairobi city to Masai Mara was good though it had a lot of traffic.

  • The Lodge conducts safari game drives and can be booked at the reception.

Game Drives

Our Game Drives were by a "Kombi" (African term for a mini-van) with a slide open top for standing inside and viewing game. See image to the right.

  • Kombi drivers are also guides who are familiar with the trails by which vehicles are allowed.
  • Tanzania is very strict about driving on main road trails for watching game.
  • Game Drives are generally early in the morning, after breakfast and in the afternoon.
  • Kombi driver guides know exactly what time animals, particularly big cats can be sighted during drives.

Masai Mara National Reserve is located in south west Kenya is a vast scenic expanse of gently rolling African savannah plains bordering Serengeti National Park in Tanzania to the south. Masai Mara is a unique wildlife conservation haven famous for its spectacular natural diversity of wildlife.

Wild Animal Encounter on Safari

Safari is a word used to describe a trip to observe wild animals in their natural habitat. You may be observing the wild animal from your Game Drive Vehicle, or otherwise on the ground. Bushwalks are a heart pumping activity in the jungle available in some private game reserves.
